This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of experimental research in the social sciences, with an emphasis on political science research. Students will learn the basic theory and intuition behind experimental research design, as well as how to design an experiment, and analyze and present experimental data. Students will be introduced to two major approaches to experimental research—pioneered by Rubin and Campbell respectively.

Students will also learn about the ethical considerations associated with experiments. Throughout the course students will also work on designing an experiment that is relevant to their substantive area of interest. By the end of this course students should be able to design an experiment to answer a specific research question, and to present basic analysis of both average and heterogenous effects.
