INTRODUCTION TO PROCESS-TRACING
Process-Tracing Methodology has gained prominence among social scientists in recent decades. It is celebrated as a methodology that offers advantages regarding, for instance, its explanatory power and its ability to incorporate time as a central factor in the analysis: that is, instead of focus in isolated or semi-isolated and rather static variables, Process-Tracing aims to identify full “chains” of intervening factors that link causes and effects in a given period. Moreover, Process-Tracing has proven to be quite versatile, so it can be used in very diverse settings and even in combination with other methodologies – therefore leading to more robust explanations and/or theoretical generalizations.
