This course is designed to answer the following question: how data generated by social media platforms can be used to support social research? Social media data can be useful for social researchers because provide indications of attention to specific policies and can be considered an useful approach to study public opinion. This course focuses on the tools used to explore and understand social media data. In the two weeks, we cover a comprehensive review of software tools and methods of accessing and analyzing "big data" from websites, blog sites, twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube.
After taking this course, the participants will be able to use some Application Programming Interface (API) services to collect data from different social media sources and process the collected data using statistical methods for social sciences. Prior knowledge of some basic statistics is recommended for this course.
